Document Interchange Formats

Currently, word and document processing occupies two application spaces: personal word processing and publishing, and large-scale technical publishing. This separation in the current marketplace leads The Open Group to endorse dual systems of document interchange. The Document Interchange Reference Model (S209) endorses several document models. Open Group-compliant document interchange assumes that the document to be interchanged conforms to one of the endorsed document models. The intent is that an open systems user will be able to interchange documents between any two compliant document interchange systems. This specification identifies and relates to the various applicable international standards and recommendations.
